Many patients remember being told “you are HIV positive” and feeling like life was over. The thoughts going through many patients heads that day were dark and the emotions of fear, dread, shame, stress, anxiety and panic seemed too much to deal with. The hospital, clinic or NGO normally will refer patients to a local support group and they are told to return for follow up care.
Too often, patients are overwhelmed by this traumatic news. The last place they wish to be seen is the local clinic or at a NGO HIV service provider. This emotional trauma is a large factor in why South Africa has a 55% loss to follow up rate. Diamond Life has pioneered a different approach based on models that work to address other stigmatized conditions. Our model allows those newly diagnosed to meet with someone from their area without the need to visit highly stigmatized centers before working through the emotional trauma, the relationship dynamics and the education process.
While many have experienced these feelings upon first being diagnosed and felt overwhelmed, many have worked through this stage and are today living successfully with HIV. These patients have a wealth of experience, insight and knowledge and have mostly not been seen as a part of the solution. Diamond Life sees this population as a vital part of the solution. There are currently more than 2 million people on ART in South Africa. This is a great untapped resource of support if structured into a proper framework that respects and protects their right to be anonymous contributors to a HIV competent nation.
The I’m a Survivor campaign seeks to assist those who have tested positive for HIV to accept their status and work through the emotional turmoil that often occurs when newly diagnosed. In order to achieve this we are seeking to recruit mentors from the large population of people living successfully with HIV.
In order to qualify to mentor someone in your area we have established some guidelines that need to be met.
